A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING CHRISTINE VARNADO OF HATTIESBURG, MISSISSIPPI, A STUDENT AT DUKE UNIVERSITY, FOR HER ACADEMIC HONORS AND AWARDS.
Whereas, Christine Varnado, a recent graduate of Hattiesburg High School, has made the Dean's List in her first semester at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, where she has earned an impressive 4.0 GPA and number one ranking in her class; and
WHEREAS, in addition to making the Dean's List, Christine has been selected as an A.B. Duke Scholar (15 in a class of 1600), has received the National Alliance for Excellence in Education National Scholarship Award and has been named winner of a competitive internship through Terry Sanford Institute for Public Policy; and
WHEREAS, Christine's determination to achieve academic excellence was quite evident while a senior at Hattiesburg High School, where she scored a perfect 36 on the American College Test (ACT), and was one of only 74 students out of 957,301 across America to make a perfect score, and was named Mississippi's Outstanding High School Student by the Mississippi Association of Educators; and
WHEREAS, her intended majors at Duke are English and Public Policy, and she is to be recognized for the following academic honors and awards: A.B. Duke Scholarship, R.C. Easley STAR Student Scholarship, Tylenol Corporation Scholarship, Robert C. Byrd Scholarship, National Merit Corporation Scholarship, Adams Vision Scholarship, Service Merchandise Scholarship, Laws of Life Essay Winner for Mississippi, VFW Voice of Democracy Winner for Mississippi and National Finalist and three-year State Champion for Extemporaneous Speaking; and her university extracurricular activities include the following: Aycock Dormitory Representative to Community Service Council, Duke University Publications Board, Archives Literary Magazine, Duke University Tutorial Program, Member of Collegeum Musicum Vocal Performance Group, Student Intern for Doubletake Magazine, Duke University Quiz Bowl Team, Duke University Wesley Foundation and Duke Chapel Congregation, and Duke University Mentor Program; and
WHEREAS, Christine's academic excellence has earned for her and her community the respect and admiration of the Legislature and of the citizenry of this state:
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend Christine Varnado of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, a student at Duke University, for her academic honors and awards, and wish her continued success in her future career.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to Christine Varnado and her family and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
